Most people seem to think that a 20 year old version of MAME is the best you can hope for out of a Raspberry Pi.
It requires you to map controls using controller ID manually or make mame.ini readonly. MAME exe will definitely forget joypad controls and any controllers that will somehow get disconnected from the PC (this is usual behavior of wireless controllers and none of the frontends/emulators have any problem with this).
